7 Ways to Proactively Avoid “iPosture” “Text Neck” or the latest “iHunch”

We all know by now that our posture is terrible when using our smartphones. So we are not going to start this post off with a list of scary stats that terrify you into temporary strong posture, instead we are going to jump right in on a few ways to make good posture permanent.

1. BUY A HEADSET:

We know, We know, headsets are a pain. But would you rather treat your body well or look uncool? Actually do not answer that question. Sure it can be scary when you are walking down the street and you see someone talking to themselves, but the reality is that no-one is really looking up anymore anyway so no-one will really notice.

Why is that headphones are cool – but headsets are not? This needs to change.

2. BE MORE CONSCIOUS OF YOUR ELBOWS:

Normally when texting while standing, most people jut out their elbows from their bodies and their smartphones lie around their waist or belly button. Now simply tuck your elbows into the bottom of your ribcage. Your arms and hands should automatically rise with the new positioning and your neck and head will follow along. This may feel odd at first, but like any new change give it some time.

3. USE YOUR BACKPACK OR PURSE AS A PROP:

The whole idea of this post is to help you raise your smartphone closer to eye level and a really simple way to do that is to use either your body (if right handed tuck your left hand under your right elbow and if left hand……) or grab your purse, backpack or bag of Doritos and use it as a prop.

4. PUT YOUR ELBOWS ON YOUR KNEES WHEN SEATED AND LEAN FORWARD:

Who would have guessed that the elbow would play such a role in 21st century posture? Those guru’s who say, “It is all connected,” may be onto something.

The next time you are seated – stick your butt out against the back of the chair and place your elbows on your knees with your phone held up. Notice how your back and neck are perfectly in-line when doing this? You are looking for straight body alignment and this position accomplishes it.

5. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE VOICE MESSAGE OPTION:

Why text for 30 seconds and hurt your neck, back and spine when you can just hold down a button and record a 10 second message? Experts predict that voice will be coming more and more popular in the next years and all of us here at Corpore Wear could not be more stoked for that as people may actually start looking up again.

6. STAND LIKE DOROTHY FROM WIZARD OF OZ:

Stand up right now and place the back of your heels together and point your toes out to 45 degree angles. Now grab your smartphone and try and hold it at your waist and look down. For all of us at Corpore Wear this personally this gives us all instant physical pain running from our necks to the middle of our backs.

In short, if you stand like this you cannot not help raising your smartphone to a suitable position.

Amazing right?

Last but certainly not least…..

7. DRINK A BOTTLE OF WINE AND THEN HIDE YOUR PHONE:

This may be cheating a bit, but do you really need your smartphone as much as you think you do? Consulting behemoth Deloitte did a study and discovered that Americans check their phone 8 billion times a day, averaging out to 46 times for each adult. Please do not ask us how they got that number. Cough, Cough – Big Brother. But, honestly it may be conservative.

Check out the app Moment as it tracks how many minutes you spend on your phone each day, or the app Checky as it checks how many times you unlock it.
